Five Thrifted Fall Fashion Trends
No matter how much I like to dress in a unique way, I still get lured in by the temptation of trends. Now, that doesn't mean I'm going to run out to the big box stores to grab everything from their newest collections, but instead, I will hightail it to my favorite THRIFT stores to look for items that can integrate into my current wardrobe and still feel like I'm current.

Thrifting is amazing, but it's good to follow a few rules when shopping second hand. These are just helpful ways to not accumulate too much and to be more intentional with the things that you're buying.
- Look at what you currently have. What's missing? What needs to be replaced?
- While you're checking out your stash of goodies, look for things you can donate--and actually take them!
- When you're thrifting, think outside of the box. In the case of Fall Trends, even if you don't find something exact, does it at least have the feeling you're going for? Also, be sure to look in all the departments at the thrift store. You can easily incorporate sweaters, belts, and scarves into home decor!
There are actually several things trending this Fall, but I tried to focus on five that I've recently thrifted and work well with items in my own closet. I don't like to add in trends that don't really work with my actual style and I likely won't reach for when I get dressed. Trends are fun, but make them work for you...not against you.
BROWN
If you think brown is boring, think again! It can add so much depth to an outfit and works well, obviously, as a neutral-it can work with almost anything!
I stepped away from brown for a really long time. While it was popular in the 1990's, it seemed to go by the wayside in my closet, in favor of black. And, because so many of us were taught not to mix the two, I chose black over brown...never the two to meet for a couple of decades. I'm so happy brown is coming back, more popular than ever, though, because it's so warm and rich!
The great thing about brown being trendy? It is very plentiful at the thrift store! You know all those folks who went through the 1990's? They're clearing out their closets in droves and brown was definitely a big part of what they're donating. Also, they had the money to buy good quality, so you'll likely find some amazing brands!
EQUESTRIAN
Now, while I'm sharing a very specifically equestrian-themed sweater here, this trend doesn't mean that you need to have actual horses or ribbons on your clothes...while those things are pretty fun! Instead, the trend can mean brown and black worn together, leather, gold/brass accessories and finishes, and tall boots. The Ralph Lauren aesthetic is very popular as well and these two trends are similar to each other. Those polo ponies, plaid, and Americana are having a moment!
This quintessential 1990's equestrian-themed sweater deserves its place in the spotlight right now. It's so amazing and is in great vintage condition. My friend Abby found it while thrifting, but it didn't work for her...so she graciously gave it to me! I was so excited that the temps dipped recently so I could pull it out of storage. I got at least three compliments while I was wearing it...always the true test of a fun piece!

RED
Red can be a polarizing color for some. I can still picture our very RED kitchen in the early 2000's. I don't know if I'll ever do that again (never say never), but it was definitely a vibe. If you don't want to go full red, you can bring in a hint of red like the pants I have here. They're kind of a purply-brown red. That's the fun thing about color...there are so many different shades...you can always find one that will work for you.
BARN COATS
I wasn't sure about this trend at first, since I don't love wearing a coat, but I found this beauty at an ESTATE SALE (not thrifted, but second hand) and was instantly smitten. Layers are a great way to create a great outfit. Ralph Lauren has a "rule of three" that has helped build a strong fashion empire. This rule means a top, bottom, and a third complementary piece. A barn coat is the perfect addition because it looks good and is super comfy!
Barn coats don't have to be denim, but it's a classic look for sure. Instead, it's more about the collar, boxy cut and pockets! Adding this to your wardrobe will also be a great way to pull together an outfit in one step. A barn coat looks amazing over a pretty sweater or sweatshirt and with jeans or leggings.
VESTS
Every year for back to school, my grandma would either give me some money to find some new clothes or she would take me shopping for a couple of new things. I specifically remember one year in the early 1990's, going to JC Penney and picking out a floral embroidery style vest. It was THE LOOK at the time and I felt so cool. Add in some jeans, a silk shirt, and my Eastland's...I was IT! I've worn a couple of different vest styles since then, but that vest will always be such a sweet memory for me-I wish I still had it!
Whether you choose to add one or all five of these trends to your Fall wardrobe, I hope I've inspired you to try something new. Maybe you already have some pieces that would work for these trends and you just needed a little encouragement to put them back into rotation.
