If you're a thrifter, reseller, or someone who just loves a good deal, the Goodwill Outlet (a.k.a. the Goodwill Bins) is one place you absolutely need to experience. unlike your standard thrift store, the Outlet is where donated items go when they haven't sold at retail Goodwill stores -- and that's where the adventure begins.

Here's a complete guide to what to expect at a Goodwill Outlet store, how to shop, and how to find the best deals at Goodwill Outlet.

People gathered around blue bins at the Goodwill Outlet
The Goodwill Outlet can be very overwhelming if you're not prepared. Just know that there are people who make their livelihood from the items they find at the Bins, so they take it very seriously. Most folks are friendly and want to be helpful, but there are some who are not as kind. Don't take things too personally if someone gets upset with you...just explain that it's your first time or you're new to the outlet game.

WHAT IS THE GOODWILL OUTLET?

The Goodwill Outlet is a last-chance clearance center where items are sold by the pound rather than individually priced. Merchandise is dumped into large blue bins (hence the nickname "the Bins"), and shoppers sort through them to find treasures. New bins are brought out regularly, often drawing a crowd of eager diggers.

It's chaotic, it's exciting, and it can be wildly rewarding for first-time shopping at the Bins -- especially if you know what you're doing.

Would you be brave enough to buy something at the Goodwill Outlet that you wear on your head? I'm of the mindset that everything can be cleaned...

WHAT CAN YOU FIND THERE?

Almost anything. Seriously. Some of the most common finds include:

-Clothing (men's, women's, and kids')

-Shoes and accessories

-Books, DVD's, and media

-Toys and games

-Household items and small electronics

-Craft supplies and fabric

-Vintage and collectible items

The inventory changes constantly, so every visit is different -- and that's part of the thrill of treasure hunting at Goodwill!

I snagged this vintage plaid pillow for our camp/game themed basement family room. To clean it, I simply ran it through a hot dryer cycle.

HOW DOES THE PRICING WORK?

Pricing varies slightly by location, but the general rule is that items are sold by weight. For example:

-Clothing: Around $1.25-$2.19 per pound (often lower per-pound rates if you buy in bulk)

-Books: Often sold by the inch (measured stacked together)

-Large Items: Sometimes individually priced

This means you can walk out with a huge bag of clothes for under $10 -- making it perfect for budget shoppers and those reselling thrift finds for profit.

I don't really buy clothes or shoes at the Goodwill Outlet unless they're for me. I don't do much reselling of clothing, so I'm never sure what will sell or how to price. There is plenty of great clothing and accessories at the Bins, though, for the resellers who make a living that way.

TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME SHOPPERS

Reseller tips for Goodwill Outlet shoppers often focus on efficiency and preparation. Here are a few insider tricks that'll help you shop smart and avoid overwhelm:

  1. Bring gloves -- You'll be digging through a lot of bins, and things can be dusty or mixed with broken items.
  2. Bring your own bags or carts -- Many locations don't provide bags or carts, or they're limited.
  3. Wear comfortable clothing -- You'll be moving, bending, and standing a lot.
  4. Be patient and thorough -- Don't just glance at a bin. Dig deep -- the good stuff is often at the bottom.
  5. Go early -- Some locations rotate bins at scheduled times or have the best selection earlier in the day.
  6. Be respectful -- Don't grab items out of someone else's hands, and wait for staff to give the green light before rushing to a new bin.

If you're wondering how to shop at Goodwill Outlet like a pro, preparation is everything.

IS IT WORTH IT?

Absolutely -- if you're willing to put in the work. The Goodwill Outlet isn't like a curated boutique THRIFT store. It's more like atreasure dig where persistence, patience, and a bit of luck can pay off big. Whether you're hunting vintage fashion, stocking your resale shop, or just love the thrill of the hunt, it's an experience every thrift lover should try at least once.

Cart at the Goodwill Outlet with a vintage rug and cement urn in it t
I was thrilled with these two items from my last shopping trip to the Goodwill Outlet! Each was marked individually (that planter would have been too expensive by the pound), and I got such a good deal on the rug that paying to have it professionally cleaned was worth it!

WHAT TO BRING TO THE GOODWILL OUTLET:

Before You Go:

-Check store hours and location

-Dress comfortably (closed-toe shoes, layered clothing)

-Bring gloves (gardening or work gloves recommended)

-Bring reusable bags or a rolling cart

-Pack hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes

-Bring water and snacks (some visits can last hours)

-Carry small bills or a credit card

-Consider a face mask for dust or strong odors

-Know your price-per-pound limits (set a budget!)

-Bring a measuring tape (helpful for furniture or clothing)

-Load your favorite reselling or fashion apps (e.g., eBay, Depop, Poshmark, Google Lens)

While Shopping:

-Scan bins thoroughly, especially bottoms and corners

-Test electronics or open items if allowed

-Sort and re-check your cart before checking out

-Be courteous and follow bin rules

-Wash or sanitize your hands afterward
