5 Items to Thrift for Your Thanksgiving Table

Thrifting

It's easy to think that you need to buy all new things to decorate with each holiday, but that doesn't have to mean breaking your budget. Feel like you've waited too long to find the good stuff? I promise the five items I'm sharing here are plentiful at the thrift store any day of the week! Hope you'll accept the challenge to shop secondhand for your Thanksgiving table this year.

Every time I share a thrift challenge, I like to reiterate some good rules of thumb when shopping second hand. These are just helpful ways to not accumulate too much and to be more intentional with the things that you're buying.

  1. Look at what you currently have. What's missing? What needs to be replaced?
  2. While you're checking out your stash of goodies, look for things you can donate--and actually take them!
  3. When you're thrifting, think outside of the box. In the case of the Thanksgiving decor, you can easily shop all over the linen section for table coverings (more on that in a bit) and you can lean heavily on the kitchen section to fill a variety of your needs!

BED SHEETS-TURNED-TABLE CLOTHS

Granted, you may find a table cloth that works for your needs, and if so, buy it! If you can't find just the right thing, though, or one that you particularly like...don't pass over the bed sheets!! A flat sheet works perfectly as a table cloth and might actually be a little bit cheaper than buying an actual table cloth. I grabbed this one recently and plan on cutting off the top part of the sheet. I love the colors and the striped design.

If you're worried about bringing thrifted "soft" items into your home, I don't think there's anything that a good washing can't handle. I swear by the MOLLY'S SUDS products to clean without harsh chemicals. I love the whitening powder and use it in every load that I do.

TRAYS AND PLATTERS

I'm a sucker for transferware in general, especially when it has such a pretty design and color scheme! This vintage turkey platter has a bit of a chip on the edge, but I don't even care. It's still lovely and can be used as decor...even if I don't use it for food.

Ironstone is never a bad thing to pick up. You can generally find it in plain white, so the pieces can be used for just about any occasion! There is just nothing prettier to me than a big fat stack of antique ironstone platters in all shapes and sizes.

SERVING UTENSILS

No matter what, there never seems to be enough serving utensils on hand for what you need, especially if you're hosting. It never fails that guests bringing dishes will forget a utensil to serve with. Never fear! I always keep a good second hand stash because they're inexpensive and nice to have!

BOARDS AND TRIVETS

I LOVE LOVE LOVE cutting boards. I may have a problem...but I don't want to discuss that now. I grabbed this amazing one recently and I cannot get over how beautiful it is. A good cleaning and oiling...it will be even better than ever! Cutting boards are perfect for serving charcuterie or bread. The brass pineapple trivet will be a lovely addition to our table and will come in handy for all the tasty hot dishes. Bonus, it could double as wall decor after the fact.

SEASONAL DECOR

Amber bottles are plentiful at the thrift store. You can often save soap bottles too, if you happen to buy the right kind. I love the particular shape of these and think they're so special with simple hydrangeas tucked inside. The vintage acorn salt + pepper shakers are just about the cutest things I've ever seen. It can be fun to be on the lookout for several options, so each person can have their own! And of course...pumpkins. I love that these are white, so they can work with just about any color palette. They're also very light weight, so storing them is easy.

I will never tell you to not go to the thrift store, but I'll bet if you do a good dig through what you already have, you will be able to find some pieces that will work perfectly for your Thanksgiving Table! With this list, though, you can fill out your stashes, so you'll be ready for next year. Maybe you can refresh a few things too and donate what you're no longer using.

Need a little bonus inspiration? Check out my Thrifted Table Scape from last year!

I hope this has you excited about creating a lovely (thrifted) table for your Thanksgiving get together. There is so much potential at the thrift store...you just need to know what to look for! I'd love for you to take this thrift challenge too, if it sounds like fun! Share a pic of your finds on Instagram and tag me so I can see: @hilaryprall.
