Want your candles to last longer?

Friends. We are gathered here today to celebrate us FINALLY getting moved into our new house! The basement is full-up with boxes…but I’m pretending they don’t exist and just trying to enjoy having the main level (somewhat) put together. There’s so much more to be done, like painting all the walls, hanging wallpaper, and figuring out where all our stuff is going to go. Until then, though, we’re just going to sit here and enjoy the reality of being in our new house!

I keep feeling like I’m just staying at an Airbnb for an extended time. You know that living-out-of-bags lifestyle where you’re kind of organized, but also, all your things are strung-around everywhere? I’ve been slowly digging out from all the piles, trying to make sense of things. I really wanted to be able to take my time organizing as we unpacked, but the reality of moving is that you also have to re-establish your routines and make some sort of sense out of your stuff. The painting + organizing + decorating can wait—I don’t want to make any rash decisions either. I’m trying to have some patience in this house—let the house tell me how things should look, or how things should be organized…based on how we live here.

One of the things I’m super excited about in unpacking and getting settled is to have our daily routines back! One thing Jason and I always enjoy is having a candle burning. Usually just one at a time…always in the same place…because I’m terrified of forgetting to blow them out. Ha! But still…there’s almost always burning in the evening while we make dinner and watch a little (lot) tv. It’s a cozy ritual and makes the house smell amazing!

I was so excited to come across a great tip recently, to help your candles last longer and burn more evenly, from Dirt Road Candle Co. Michelle makes the yummiest hand-poured soy candles and wants all of us to get the most use out of them that we can!

Candle Burning Tip from Dirt Road Candle Co.: That first burn of your Dirt Road Candle is the most important!

Because soy wax is slow-burning, your Dirt Road Candle should burn for at least 3-4 hours on that first burn, until you’ve achieved a full melt pool (this is when the wax is evenly-melted on all sides of the jar). If the wax does not melt from edge to edge, a memory ring will form and will continue to burn in that memory ring (or tunnel) for the life of the candle. Tunneling leaves a ring of wax clinging to the outside of the jar, which ends up wasting your candle…and maxes everyone sad.

Seriously, you guys! This is so simple…but so genius! I will be the first to admit that I spend a lot of money (sorry, Jason) on yummy candles…and I don’t want to be wasting them by burning them incorrectly! It’s always so funny to me that even though we live in a world of unlimited information (hello, Google), there are still things that we do incorrectly! I’m trying to be a more-informed person in lots of ways…and this little nugget of truth from Dirt Road Candle Co. is perfect to add to my arsenal of knowledge. Knowledge is power, after all…even if it’s just for candle care. Ha!

I know you’re going to want to check out all the goodness Dirt Road Candle Co. has to offer, so I’d love for you to show Michelle and her Iowa-grown business some love! You can find her on:

Annnnndddd….now I want more candles too. Whoops! Hazard of working in the world of creatives! I want all the things! I better get to burning through the candles I have already…then it’ll be time to shop!

Are you following me on Instagram yet? I’m sharing all the things about our new house and would LOVE to have you follow along! You can follow me HERE!

Now, speaking of that new house…I better get back to work! The boxes aren’t going to unpack themselves. Send chocolate…and Diet Mt. Dew!
